Enna caught a reflection of red kite in polished red skin, watched it glide and gyre around her apple’s core. Marvelled how she had caught its light but not its sound. Bit into the fruit of it, tasted the sweet #manifold of its raptor spirit on her swirling tongue.
torus #vss365
“Oh!” fell out of a nearby apple tree, sending a #torus of starlings into the sky. Enna, perched on a dry stone wall, captured the murmuration in the fruit’s red skin. Her mouth watering. “No! Don’t!” The boy rubbed his grazed knee. “The kite, it vanished when you bit!”
field #vss365
“What’s your name?” Said Enna. The boy was close now, his black fingers exploring her white knee. “#Field,” he said. “Funny name.” “It’s short for Fielding, Warrington Fielding. They don’t like white folk here.” Her skin turned black. He stood back. “How did you do that?
zero #vss365
Enna touched Field’s nose, and laughed. “Just like that! Oh, you do suit red!”
“Red? What’s red?” Then he saw his hands, his arms. His eyes widened. Two great #zeroes, joined by a third below his nose. “What have you done?”
“Brought a splash of colour to the monochrome.”
morphism #vss365
“I look like those apples. Did you do that too?”
Enna took a bite, grinned a red skin. “I get these words in my head,” she said. “And I have to do something with them. Today it’s #morphism.”
“What’s that?”
She took his hand & he felt wildflower long grass in his skin.
obstreperous #vss365
His #obstreperous faded into silent grin, a boy in a spin. She laughed as he spun, arms out, around fun, pulled off his top, ran his hands through new colours, wildflowers swaying in his skin, over his face, chest n belly. A passing white butterfly fluttered on his laugh.
